Caring for destination

This tour provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.

Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:

Promote local culture and traditions.

Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:

This tour not only teaches visitors about some of the unique history of the island and some of the early explorers (including Captain Cook), but it also allows local ‘Alaki village's to gather and display their local handicrafts for tourists to admire and purchase, helping to keep these local traditions alive, allow tourists to learn more about the process, and help to provide sustainable income for these local women.

As well as this, visitors can experience the local customs first hand, such as preparing the Tongan tapa, Tongan mats, hats and bags; how the Tongan ‘Umu is prepared and cooked; and the graceful traditional Tongan solo dance to the sound of the old ‘Ukulele.
